1950s Sunday Afternoon

Brisbane Street on a Sunday
was lined with
young men in fast cars
who vied for the attention
of even faster girls
who strolled in pairs
with feigned disinterest
until
choices made
they left in a convoy
for Punchbowl Reserve
to explore and debate
the purpose of life

Urbane Sophistication

one shilling bought a small packet
of black and white cork tips
long slim tokens of status
to be savoured in secret places
in school toilets
behind bike sheds
and at the bottom of Royal Park
each forbidden cigarette
balanced between untainted fingers
angled to create an urbane image
of chic sophistication
a move much practiced
with pouting lips
and half closed eyes
in front of the bathroom mirror
the smoke drawn deep into lungs
the protested against the invasion
of the much-envied drawback

eyes streamed  from suppressed coughs
that filled the throat
teeth clenched
to protect the image
of the adolescent smoker until
eventually
smoke erupted
from nose and mouth
to the admiration

of friend and foe alike
and the hidden relief of the smoker
