Melton Midweek Writer’s Workshop…

Is a small dynamic group that aims to nurture, inspire, and challenge beginning, emerging and established writers alike, offering the opportunity to engage with a community of local writers who believe passionately in what they do.

Based at Melton library, 31 McKenzie St, Melton, the group meets 1.00 – 3.00 weekly on a Wednesday, except for the first Wednesday in each month.

The purpose of the writer’s workshops is to improve the craft of Melton writers and to encourage published and unpublished writers by bringing different perspectives to the art of storytelling.

Facilitated by a published writer and poet, the group works on the concept of ‘writers helping writers’, sharing skills and knowledge of the elements of writing and the industry in general.

What is a writer’s group?

Double Bracket: "However great a man's natural talent may be, the art of writing cannot be learned all at once."

~ Jean Jacques Rousseau
A writer's group is basically a group of people, who like to write, meeting periodically to read, critique and support one another's work. A writer’s group also offers opportunities to learn about writing techniques and information about the industry with readings, workshops & presentations. It requires a fair amount of trust and self-awareness, and a desire to learn and grow as a writer.

A well functioning writer's group acts as a supportive environment for everyone in the group, with an aim to improving individual writing skills and habits.

What is expected of members of a writer’s group?

  • read and respond to each other's writing
  • participate in free-writing and other informal writing activities
  • discuss grammar and vocabulary choices
  • learn about different types of writing in English
  • share information about the writing industry
